CUMRU TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A body was found inside a burning vehicle in Berks County early Sunday morning. 

The body was found in the area of South 9th Street in Cumru Township by firefighters who were called to a reported fire around 3:30 a.m., according to the coroner. 

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a fully involved vehicle fire near the city line.

Investigators were immediately notified after the body was discovered in the vehicle, according to officials. 

According to Berks County Coroner Matthew J. Stitzel, the Coroner’s Office took custody of the dead person at 6:17 a.m..

Following the on-scene investigation, the person was transported to the Reading Hospital morgue.

The identity of the person is currently unknown. 

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

The Coroner’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Reading Fire Department, Cumru Township Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police – Reading, Cumru Township Fire Department, and the Berks County Forensic Unit.
