The City of Erie is continuing its efforts to make the area bicycle-friendly.

City council voted during Wednesday morning’s meeting on a “first reading” to fund construction of the Erie Loop Bikeway French Street Project, allotting the project $350,000.

The project’s goal is to make safe bike lanes on a ten-block stretch of French Street.

Erie City Council President Dr. Tyler Titus said this is something that’s long overdue.

“The city has been pretty difficult for those who don’t have a motor vehicle; it’s not super pedestrian-friendly, and one of the steps that we need to take is making it bike-friendly as well. We have a lot of people who get around our city via bike. Not only is it better for the environment, but is something more fiscally feasible for a lot of people,” said Dr. Titus.

At the next meeting on April 15, the city administration will present where the project currently stands and open it up for public comment.
