ALLENTOWN, Pa. – About two months after making service cuts, LANTA is considering doing it again.
According to a notice posted on the transit agency’s website, LANTA is proposing scaling back service on nearly two dozen bus routes.
A public hearing about the proposed changes, which would take effect on Monday, June 15, will be held later this month.
According to LANTA’s website, the proposal calls for changes to 21 routes. In almost all of the cases, the ‘change’ is a cancelation of one or more trips. Only one route- 210- would add trips.
See the complete list here.
The routes with no changes would be: 216, 319, 323, 325, 402, 403, 409, 410, 413, 422, 423, 431, 441, 501, 502, 506, 601, 613, 701, 702 and 703, plus Enhanced Bus Service (EBS) Blue Line and Green Line.
On January 26, LANTA enacted changes to its Blue Line, as well as 13 other routes. At the time, LANTA told 69 News the service cuts represented about a 5% reduction in service.
Also, last month, LANTA enacted its first fare increase in more than a decade.
Those changes came after a much more dire prediction: in May of 2025, LANTA said it was dealing with a state funding shortfall amounting to an “annual recurring unfunded deficit of approximately $8 million on the bus system.”
LANTA warned that a 20% cut to fixed route bus service and a 25% fare increase were possibilities. That didn’t come to pass.
69 News reached out to LANTA on Thursday and Friday for more information about the latest possible changes, and the reasons for them, but LANTA did not respond.
LANTA will hold a public meeting on the proposal on Monday, April 29 at 60 W. Broad Street in Bethlehem, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
LANTA recommends registering for the meeting ahead of time. The meeting also will be available virtually.
