There’s a relatively new place that is tucked away along a growing part of State Street in downtown Erie. It has everything to do with golf, fun, and a friendship that built it all.
Friendship is the foundation of this mini golf course. Their story starts in elementary school.
Almost three years ago, Tony Arrigo took on the challenge of opening a golf-themed
“place” in this space.
His family also currently operates Beechwood Golf Course. But Tony needed a business partner so, he called Tom McQueeney.
They chose a name that honors the Battle of Lake Erie naval hero, Oliver Hazard Perry.
A family affair for Tom, as his parents helped with the building and painting of the course. Now, the location along the 400 block of State Street in downtown Erie takes over the full third floor.
When you walk in, a “Golden Tee PGA Tour” golf game greets you, a rare arcade game in the region.
There are two rooms, with seating overlooking the street, near a full-service bar. It’s part of supporting other local businesses, and among the revitalization in this area of State Street.
There 18 holes for all golfers to try, including themed ones from golf-inspired movies, along with Erie-inspired holes. Visitors might feel like they are in Waldameer’s Whacky Shack. It’s right next to the SeaWolves-style hole, as players try to get around a base.
Aside from mini golf, there’s also a golf simulator at Hazards, where people can try different courses from around the region and the nation.
The mini golf business even has something specially curated for fans of Taylor Swift, where the women’s restroom is an ode to the singer.
Open six days a week it is a space which can be rented out for anything from birthday parties to private events, or a spot to watch sports, all thanks to the partnership of a decades-long friendship.
