LOWER OXFORD TWP., Pa. – The Chester County District Attorney says one person is dead and six others are injured after shots rang out around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln University in Lower Oxford Township.
It happened during the university’s homecoming weekend while festivities were taking place after the football game.
One person who had a gun on them was detained, according to investigators.
“It was a chaotic scene and people fled in all different directions,” said Chester County District Attorney Christopher De Barrena-Sarobe.
“We are concerned for our students who had to experience this, our alumni who had to experience this and our visitors and friends,” said Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee.
Federal, state and local police are working on the case.
The district attorney said investigators are going through evidence.
“We’re operating as if this is not an incident where someone came in with the design to inflict mass damage on a college campus,” said De Barrena-Sarobe.
In a statement, Lincoln University said in part:
“What occurred last night was tragic for our students, our families, and our community. Gun violence happens far too often in our country, and we are heartbroken that Lincoln University and its students are among the latest victims of such senseless violence.”
The shooting happened at what the university’s police chief said was supposed to be a joyous occasion.
“Devastated, if there was another word to describe that that’s more impactful, I would use it, but devastated is a start,” said Chief Partee.
The university said classes are canceled on Monday and staff will be on-site to provide support to students who may need assistance.
