Gannon University is taking the plunge during the Bear Force One Polar Plunge from now until 4 p.m.
Students, faculty, staff, and even President Iwanenko are plunging into cold waters under the Gannon Arch on West 7th Street in Erie.
The event encourages the community to come together to show support for the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. Funds raised during the event will be distributed to the Special Olympics.
The goal was to raise $10,000 and as of today Gannon has reached that goal. Meaning that President Walter Iwanenko will be taking the plunge alongside the other participants.
The Plunge was organized by the chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha with a friendly competition with Mercyhurst University, PennWest Edinboro, and Penn State Behrend, all hoping to raise the most this year.
Those who raise money during this plunge will receive special rewards. Individuals who raise at least $50 will receive a Special Olympics sweatshirt and those who raise $250 will receive a commemorative blanket.
The community is encouraged to attend the event to cheer on participants and to support fundraising for this event.
