SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Electric City got its name because it was the first in the nation to have electric-powered streetcars, and now it’s that time of the year when you can ride one yourself.

The Scranton Trolley Excursions started up this week for the season, and it’s their first weekend of operation.

On Saturday, people boarded at the main passenger platform of the Steamtown National Historic Site for trolley rides that went to Montage Mountain and back. Each trip is around 45 minutes long.

Pennsylvania weather: Sunshine, cool weather start weekend

Anyone who went on the ride got to enjoy nice scenery and had the chance to learn a lot about the history of Scranton and its ties to trains.

“It’s honestly really cool, the history here is really great. The restorations they do for these are incredible, honestly,” Thomas Semmel from Lehighton said.

On select Sundays during the summer, the trolley ride will also go to PNC Field, bringing fans right to Scranton Wilkes-Barre Railriders games.
