RICHMOND TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Investigators are revealing more of what they know and what they’re waiting to find out about a deadly crash that killed two volunteer firefighters.
The crash happened Saturday on Route 222 near the roundabout in Richmond Township.
“I know I speak for you, if I had anyone else to go through this with,” Jennifer Buck said looking at Jen Shick, who both tragically lost their husbands.
The wives, children and other loved ones of Chief Jeff Buck and Asst. Chief Rob Shick, Jr. of Walnuttown Fire Company found solace in one another.
“My dad was always looking to help anybody, whether it was family member, friend or a complete stranger who was quite possibly having the worst day of their lives,” said Robert Buck, son of Jeff Buck.
“We were together all the time,” said Jen Shick of the families.
Words that rang true even in the 2 chiefs’ final moments. Buck and Shick were killed in a tragic hit-and-run crash on Route 222, north of 662, on Saturday. Authorities say a car driven by Alexander Sepulveda Rivera left the road and hit the UTV the firefighters were riding in while searching for a missing woman.
“It’s hard because you’re doing something as a family and he’s gone,” explained Jen Shick. “That was his dedication. That was their dedication. You could count on Rob. You could count on Jeff.”
“Two lost lives. Two first responders lost their life in the line of duty, caused by an individual who never had a driver’s license, who had no respect for the law,” said Berks County District Attorney John Adams.
Adams says authorities are still trying to find the owner of the car Sepulveda Rivera was driving as well as determine how he came to be behind the wheel that day.
“That is part of our investigation to determine,” says Adams. “If he had permission to have that vehicle, or if he had taken the vehicle and not returned it or was it stolen.”
In the meantime, the fire company is focusing on the two chiefs who passed, their loved ones, and their firehouse family.
“Once we grieve, we lay our two chiefs to rest, we will be back to responding to calls as we normally would,” said Walnuttown Fire Lt. Ryan Tyson.
Authorities say they’re waiting on the toxicology results, which they expect in the next 5-7 days, and the final accident reconstruction report.
Sepulveda Rivera is in jail on these latest charges with a $500,000 bail.
