When the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC step onto the pitch at Sports Illustrated Stadium this Wednesday to take on New York Red Bulls, they aren’t just facing a Major League Soccer giant—they are entering the professional home of one of Pittsburgh’s own.

Tanner Rosborough, the 18-year-old West Allegheny native and former Beadling SC standout, represents a rarity in Western Pennsylvania soccer: a player who skipped the traditional launchpad model to climb a direct, vertical ladder into the global professional ranks.

While he may be managed carefully this week following a heavy professional load and may not be on the pitch Wednesday night, his presence in Harrison, NJ, provide a shining example that talented young players can find a direct pathway from Pittsburgh to the highest level of soccer in the U.S.

Before he was wearing the number 66 for the Red Bulls, Rosborough was a staple of the Pittsburgh youth scene, where a decade at Beadling SC provided the competitive floor that caught the eyes of scouts from across the state line.

“Played for Beadling my whole life and played with the same group of guys… those are some of my closest friends,” Rosborough said on Pittsburgh Soccer Now‘s Kids on the Pitch podcast.

“There’s a specific grit you get playing in Pittsburgh. It’s not always the flashiest soccer, but it’s tough. I realized quickly that the work rate I learned at Beadling was my edge. I might not have been the most technical kid on day one, but I wasn’t going to be outworked.”

At 14, Rosborough made a decision that fundamentally changed his trajectory when he traded the familiar hills of Pittsburgh for the high-intensity residency of the New York Red Bulls Academy.

It was a move that traded childhood comfort for a hyper-professional scouting web, a transition that carried a significant emotional toll. “It was definitely a massive sacrifice,” Rosborough admitted.

“At 14, you don’t fully grasp what moving away means until you’re sitting in a room in Jersey by yourself and realize you’ve traded your childhood for a job. The standards are so much more professional. You have to find your confidence once you make that switch into such a big club. That was probably the hardest part for me.”

Once inside the Red Bull system, the learning curve shifted from the personal to the tactical. The franchise has been  world-renowned for its high-pressing system, but is seeing a bit of some tactical nuance changes since the hire of Michael Bradley as Head Coach.  Playing with the Red Bulls organization in the past four years, Rosborough has evolved into a more complete player going beyond his natural instincts.

“In Pittsburgh, I was often the kid who could just outrun people or rely on instinct. Here, if you aren’t tactically disciplined, the system fails. You’re the first line of defense”

This tactical maturity led to more growth for Rosborough in 2025, featuring an elite training stint with Red Bull’s European partner clubs in Germany and Austria, which refined the edge he brought to the international stage.

The visibility of this vertical pathway placed him directly in the sightlines of U.S. Soccer, leading to a U-15 CONCACAF Championship and a standout tenure with the U-17s, highlighted by a four-goal performance against St. Kitts.

For Pittsburgh-based players, there have been others who have taken the route through MLS-based Academy programs, and others who have followed more traditional route (Michael Sullivan for example, played with Steel City FC’s Academy — previously Hotspurs/Arsenal — then after four years at Pitt, was selected in MLS SuperDraft by Toronto. Sullivan currently is playing with FC Cincinnati 2).

The Riverhounds Academy has offered a launchpad for selected players in recent years to sign USL Academy Contracts including two players on the current roster (Aldi Flowers-Gamboa and Warren Agostoni).  Other USL Academy Contract players for the Riverhounds have gone on to play collegiately, including Wyatt Borso (Notre Dame), Anders Bordoy (Memphis/Pitt) and most recently Pablo Linzoain (Davidson) into top-tier D1 programs.

The Rosborough model remains the all-in professional gamble, bypassing the safety net of college for a direct seat in a global machine.

Now officially signed as a First Team Homegrown player through 2028, Rosborough has already logged five appearances for the MLS side this spring.

Under Bradley, Tanner’s role in 2026 is defined by his status as a high-value bridge player.

Bradley has shown an unprecedented willingness to trust youth, famously starting three players under the age of 17 earlier this spring. While Rosborough has primarily served as a tactical spark off the bench for the first team—logging five appearances and 64 minutes of MLS action—he is being groomed as the prototypical modern forward for this new system.

In the first team, Rosborough has been used as a the change-of-pace option, used to stretch tired defenses with the relentless sprint volume Bradley demands.

Meanwhile, with Red Bulls II in MLS NEXT Pro, Rosborough is the undisputed leader of the line. His match-winning goal against Columbus on March 1 serves as the perfect resume for his 2026 role: a player with the engine to press for 90 minutes and the composure to execute the decisive finish in Bradley’s more calculated attack.

Whether he features on Wednesday or continues his development with NYRB II, his focus remains on making a lasting impact.

Entering 2026, Rosborough’s focus has shifted from merely participating to becoming a consistent fixture.

Tanner Rosborough is no longer just a prospect — he is fighting to translate his prolific youth scoring into a permanent role in the Red Bull attack.
