MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The city council passed a first reading on Tuesday morning for a proposed planned unit development that would bring a new hotel to Myrtle Beach.
The planned unit development, or PUD for short, would be between 26th Avenue North and 27th Avenue North.
The development would include the creation of an oceanfront hotel that would have about 400 rooms, a parking garage, and a pedestrian access corridor.
Cameron Armstrong, senior planner for the City of Myrtle Beach, said the new hotel would be built on the property of the former Sea Dip Oceanfront Resort.
“The old Sea Dip property down at the end of 27th Avenue North that was purchased, the Sea Dip would be brought down, and they’ll build the new hotel on that spot,” Armstrong said.
The new hotel will be developed by Drury Development Corporation.
“It’s a really great product, and we’re constantly looking for ways to innovate our tourism product and stay at the forefront of tourism, so this is just another addition to that great legacy,” Armstrong said.
The development has an estimated timeline of 10 years.
Though it may be years until visitors can roll their luggage into the hotel’s lobby, some people are already looking forward to the possible new development.
“There’s no downside to it,” said Diane Ruck, a Myrtle Beach visitor. “Tourists will have something spanking new, easy parking, and a lot of jobs. Let’s think of the local jobs too, so how could it be a bad thing?”
One Horry County man said he believes the area will benefit from the new development.
“It would bring more tourism in, and having a new hotel with new facilities, I think it would improve the place,” said Bill Judy, who lives in Surfside Beach.
The PUD has to go through the council for a second reading before any next steps are taken.
