BERN TWP., Pa. – The warden at the Berks County Jail in Bern Township is stepping down.
Jeffrey Smith is moving to Lehigh County to be closer to home.
He’s been with the Berks County Jail system for nearly 20 years, working his way up from a corrections officer.
He’s seen the jail through a number of changes and implemented some reforms, including a program that ensures everyone leaves the jail with a form of identification.
“They didn’t have an active driver’s license and that was necessary for almost everything they did,” said Berks County Board of Commissioners Chair Christian Leinbach. “And that’s something that now is a program that’s in place in large part because of his leadership.”
Leinbach said Smith is leaving the jail in good hands. Deputy Warden of Treatment Stephanie Smith will step in as interim warden on May 8.
