Following near-recording breaking warmth last week, the Lehigh Valley is in for a cooldown that includes a freeze watch early this week.

According to the National Weather Service forecast, Sunday will see rain showers before 1 p.m. and a high near 55, a 30-degree drop from Wednesday, which saw a high of 86 degrees.

As the cold air mass settles in, conditions will only get cooler as the workweek gets started, according to the weather service. Monday’s high temperature will struggle to reach 50, and a freeze watch has been issued for early Tuesday.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 26 degrees are possible late Monday through early Tuesday morning, according to the forecast. The weather service warns that frost and freezing conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.

The cooldown won’t last too long, with slightly warmer weather returning by midweek. Wednesday will see a high near 66 and a chance of showers in the morning, according to the forecast.

High temperatures are expected to return to the 70s by the end of the week, according to the weather service.
