Sunshine, community spirit, and a shared commitment to sustainability brought residents together Saturday for Upper Darby’s Earth Day Community Celebration at GreenHorn Gardens at Arlington Cemetery.

Hosted by the Upper Darby Environmental Advisory Committee in partnership with the GreenHorn Initiative, the event marked the first collaboration between the organizations, with plans to make it an annual tradition.

Attendees, including Mayor Ed Brown and members of township council, participated in hands-on activities and environmental education, including:
• Pollinator garden design demonstrations inside the greenhouse.
• Birdwatching demonstrations by the Birding Group of Delaware County.
• A “seed bomb” make-and-take activity and children’s crafts.
• A guided walking tour of historic Arlington Cemetery.
• Information on creating pollinator-friendly spaces at home.

“This event truly reflects the power of community collaboration,” said organizers from the EAC. “It was inspiring to see residents of all ages come out to learn, connect, and celebrate Earth Day together.”
The celebration highlighted Upper Darby’s growing commitment to sustainability, education, and environmental stewardship.
“It was an incredible green team effort led by the Upper Darby Environmental Advisory Committee and partners at GreenHorn Gardens and The GreenHorn Initiative,” Cooper said.
“We were proud to be joined by Tree Tenders of Upper Darby, Upper Darby Rain Gardens, the Birding Group of Delaware County, members of the Lower Merion Conservancy, the Pennsylvania Resource Council and Murphy’s Giving Market, each bringing their own energy, expertise, and passion to help make the day such a success,” she added.
