The Lackawanna County commissioners proclaimed May as ALS Awareness Month in the county. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a devastating illness with no known cause, cure or treatment to prevent or reverse it. The average survival rate is two to five years from diagnosis. ALS not only impacts the individual, but one’s family physically, emotionally and financially. There is a critical need for more research and improved care services. From left: Commissioners Bill Gaughan and Thom Welby; Eileen and Paul Miller, ALS advocates; and Commissioner Chris Chermak.
