PPL Electric plans major transmission projects in Lackawanna County to enhance grid reliability and support future demand, with an open house set for April 21.

ARCHBALD, Pa. — A project that will change the landscape of part of Lackawanna County is in the works. PPL Electric has proposed adding to its facilities. The utility is set to hold an open house on Tuesday, April 21, to let residents know more about it.

PPL calls it the Archbald Mountain transmission project, along with the Callender Gap and Sturges transmission project.

On Archbald Mountain, a map provided by PPL shows a new substation, a switchyard, and 8 miles of transmission lines. The utility says the project is needed to meet the demands of new customers and ensure reliable electricity for everyone.

There is no mention of data centers on PPL’s website, but as we’ve reported for months, several data centers are proposed for Archbald and the surrounding communities. The lines would run through Jessup, Archbald, Olyphant, and Jefferson Township. PPL’s project website claims there are no health risks, and based upon similar projects, there should be no negative impact on property values.

The other PPL project is set for Callender Gap and Sturges; a map supplied by PPL is shown below. Sturges is part of Blakely, near Eynon, and those data centers are proposed for Archbald.

PPL says it needs this for the same reasons as the first project, to build a stronger grid and ensure dependable service. Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., PPL is holding an open house to inform people about its plans in Lackawanna County.

The open house will be held at the Montdale Country Club, on Country Club Road in Scott Township. Both projects, if they’re approved, are scheduled to begin in the Summer of 2027 and be finished by the Summer of 2030.

Both projects are pending approval of the public utility commission.
