High school students from Lackawanna and Wyoming counties participated in the annual Pennsylvania Envirothon Competition on Wednesday at the Keystone College campus. At the Envirothon, teams of five high school students compete in field testing using their knowledge in five topic areas — soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and environmental issues. A current environmental issue is chosen each year as the “hot topic” for the focus of each station as well as the oral presentation component. This year’s topic was “Non-point source pollution: it begins at home!” In addition to hosting the event, the Keystone College Environmental Education Institute and students from the Keystone College ecology club planned a fun nontesting station providing further hands-on environmental education and sharing their knowledge with the groups. The event was organized by the Wyoming and Lackawanna counties conservation districts. It included 135 students participating as 27 teams and representing eight school districts: Abington Heights, North Pocono, Valley View, Lackawanna Trail, Lakeland, Old Forge, Riverside and Tunkhannock Area.
