Dunmore used “small ball” to bring home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday and beat Honesdale, 2-1, in a Lackawanna League Division II baseball game at Schautz Stadium.
With the score tied at 1, Austin Yerka led off with a four-pitch walk and was sacrificed to second by Jackson Cady. With Jimmy Clark batting, Yerka stole third base on a 2-1 pitch. Clark walked and stole second. Diego Arias followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Yerka and give Dunmore the lead.
Cady came on in the top of the seventh and retired Honesdale in order with one strikeout to save the win for Mason Stets, who allowed one unearned run and four hits in six innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
Honesdale pitchers Brody Patrisso and Jake Fine combined to limit Dunmore (6-2 league, 9-4 overall) to just three singles.
Trevor Dressler had two hits for the Hornets (4-4, 7-6-1).
North Pocono 5, Valley View 4: At North Pocono, leadoff batter Connor Ruddy had two doubles among his three RBIs as the Trojans edged Valley View in a Lackawanna Division I game.
All of the scoring came in the first three innings. Valley View took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. North Pocono tied it with one run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the second. The Cougars reclaimed the lead, 4-3, in the top of the third, but the Trojans scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Starting pitcher Brayden VonAhnen and reliever Max LaFave maintained that advantage. VonAhnen worked scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth. LaFave then came on, allowed one hit and struck out four in two scoreless innings to close out the win.
Cael Hafner added two hits for North Pocono (4-4, 5-7).
Maddox Carey, Josh Anuszewski and Kevin Essig had two hits apiece for Valley View (1-7, 3-9).
Lakeland 10, Carbondale Area 0 (6 inn.): At Lakeland, Justin King twirled a six-inning, five-hit shutout as the Chiefs blanked Carbondale Area in a Lackawanna Division II-III crossover contest.
King walked two and struck out three.
David Naniewicz, Chase Magnot and Ty Sokoloski provided offensive support with two hits each for the Chiefs (7-3). J.P. Malak had two RBIs.
Emmanuel Gomez had two of the hits off King for the Chargers (1-9).
Softball
At Montrose, the Lady Meteors withstood a seventh-inning comeback by Elk Lake to hang on for a 6-4 victory in a Lackawanna League Division III softball first-place showdown Wednesday.
Montrose led after six innings, 6-0, before Elk Lake rallied for four runs in its final at-bat.
Cara Evans had two hits, Anna Evans homered and Allison Jennings doubled for the Lady Meteors (6-0, 6-2).
Lydia Howell and Brynn Warriner both had two hits and one RBI for the Lady Warriors (5-2, 6-5). One of Howell’s hits was a triple.
Wilkes-Barre Area 15, Scranton Prep 4: At Connell Park, Hope Burke had three hits, including two doubles and three RBIs as Wilkes-Barre Area won its first game of the season, beating Scranton Prep in a nonleague game.
Casey George also collected three hits, including a double, while Madalyn McGuinness had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for the Wolfpack (1-11). Omaryze Contreras and Aubrey Weitz chipped in two hits apiece and Grace Simko drove in two runs.
Riah Hogan doubled, homered and knocked in three runs for the Classics (1-8). Abby Wilce had two hits as well.
Wallenpaupack 14, Old Forge 8: At Wallenpaupack, Lily Mancino doubled, homered and drove in five runs as the Lady Buckhorns defeated Old Forge in a Lackawanna Division I-II crossover game.
Reagan Anderson had three hits and one RBI for Wallenpaupack (7-5). Adrianna Milutinovic added two hits and three RBIs, Lexi Lain had two hits and two RBIs and Anna Babyak chipped in two hits. Madison Haynes knocked in two runs.
Kamryn Notari led Old Forge with three hits. Ava Arnold added two hits, while Juliette DeStefano and Joselyn DeStefano both had two RBIs.
Western Wayne 19, Honesdale 7 (6 inn.): At Honesdale, Hannah DeStefano and Olivia Black each knocked in five runs to power Western Wayne to a Lackawanna League Division II win in six innings.
DeStefano had two home runs, while Black singled, doubled and homered. Khloe Mistishin added two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Wildcats (2-5, 3-5), while Cassidy Levens chipped in two hits and one RBI.
Hannah Diehl led the Lady Hornets (0-6, 1-9) with a double, home run and two RBIs. Kaydence Frampton and Autumn Razney both contributed two hits and one RBI.
Carbondale Area 2, Lakeland 1: At Lakeland, Carbondale Area pushed across a run in the top of the sixth inning to beat the Lady Chiefs in a Lackawanna Division II-III crossover game.
Aurora Esgro had three hits, including a double, and one RBI for the Chargerettes (5-3). Alexis Borosky doubled. Borosky also threw three scoreless innings in relief with one hit and three strikeouts to combine with Riley Pietrowski on a five-hitter.
Abby Ross had two of Lakeland’s five hits. Olivia Cunningham doubled for the Lady Chiefs (3-7).
