PITTSBURGH — Water was shooting from a manhole in Downtown Pittsburgh on Thursday morning.

The incident happened in the southbound lanes of the 10th Street Bypass near the intersection of Fort Duquesne Bridge shortly after 1 a.m. There was a lane restriction in place until around 9 a.m.

Alcosan tells Channel 11 that following a storm overnight, a “combined sewer overflow event” caused a structure to become partially stuck open, allowing river water to enter their system. This is what caused the water to shoot from the manhole.

The wastewater treatment company said a specialized boat installed stop logs and removed the debris, resolving the issue.
