It’s that time of year when county election offices are looking for people to roll up their sleeves and help out on the big day.

Officials in Lehigh and Northampton counties are seeking poll workers for the May 19 primary as well as Election Day in November. Poll workers open and close polling places, check in voters and keep the process running smoothly. It’s a paid volunteer position, with Lehigh County poll workers earning $195 for the day, and those in Northampton County taking home $175-$200, depending on the assignment.

It’s a long day, typically starting around 6:30 a.m. and going until after polls close at 8 p.m., but very satisfying, said Brianna Negron, Lehigh County’s acting chief clerk of elections.

“Helping people is a really rewarding experience as well as being able to participate in the electoral process,” Negron said.

Northampton County needs about 10 more poll workers, Communications Manager Kelly Prentice said. Lehigh County could use about the same number, especially in Allentown, Negron said.

Poll workers are required to undergo training. They must be registered to vote, though exceptions are sometimes made for 17-year-old high school students who wish to volunteer. Government officials and government employees are not allowed to be poll workers.

To become a poll worker, start by completing the Pennsylvania Department of State’s poll worker interest form online at pa.gov/services/vote/apply-to-become-an-election-poll-worker.

After filling out the form, volunteers will be contacted by their home county’s election office.
