Jasson Dominguez singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders a 6-5 victory over the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday night at PNC Field in Moosic.
With the score tied at 5, Jonathan Ornelas was the automatic runner at second base to start the inning. Max Schuemann walked and Spencer Jones flied out. A wild pitch advanced Ornelas to third and Schuemann to second. Dominguez then lined a 1-2 pitch to center field to score Ornelas and give the RailRiders (12-11) the win after they squandered a two-run lead in the top of the ninth.
Trailing, 4-2, Rochester scored three runs on five straight hits, including an RBI single by Phillip Glasser, RBI double by Abimelec Ortiz and RBI single by Christian Franklin. Dominguez prevented another run from scoring when he threw out Ortiz at the plate also trying to score on Franklin’s hit.
That was important because in the bottom of the ninth the RailRiders tied it. Ornelas led off with a single and was wild pitched to second. Schuemann singled him to third and he scored on a groundout by Jones to tie the game at 5 and force extra innings.
Ornelas hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to give the RailRiders a 2-1 lead. The Red Wings tied it in the top of the fourth, but the RailRiders reclaimed the lead in the fifth on an RBI fielder’s choice by Dominguez and a bases-loaded walk by Oswaldo Cabrera after he successfully challenged a pitch and had it overturned to make it 4-2.
Carlos Lagrange, the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect, started for the RailRiders and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in five innings.
Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe sat out Thursday’s game after playing in the first two games of the series on a rehab assignment.
On Friday, the series continues at 6:35 p.m. at PNC Field. Adam Kloffenstein (0-1, 7.27 ERA) is scheduled to start for the RailRiders against Rochester righty Andry Lara (1-2, 5.06).
