THROOP — Cooper Lukasavage faced Dunmore for the first time in his career Monday night. The Bucks are probably glad they likely won’t have to see the Mid Valley senior again.

Lukasavage allowed only one run and four hits in 6.1 innings with one walk and eight strikeouts to lead the Spartans to a 5-1 victory in a Lackawanna League Division II baseball game at Mid Valley High School.

“My two-seam was working pretty well,” Lukasavage said. “I trust my defense to make the plays behind me. I’m more of a contact-type pitcher, so just pitch to contact and trust the defense. The slider was working well, too.

“They hadn’t seen me before, so they don’t know how my balls move. My two-seam has got a lot of run on it, get a lot of jams with it. Slider works well off it, just spacing it and keeping them off-balance. Probably a definite advantage for me.

Nick Hricenak finished off the win for Mid Valley (10-3 overall, 8-1 league), which avenged an earlier loss to Dunmore and remained tie for first place in the division with Riverside. The Vikings beat Holy Cross on Monday, 18-2, in three innings.

The lone mistake Lukasavage made was hanging a fastball to Jamie McMynne for a home run with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. He threw 100 pitches, 63 for strikes.

“Cooper’s been our guy,” Mid Valley coach Ryan Kropa said. “He was a little disappointed he couldn’t throw a complete-game today, but the pitch count got him at the end. He locates so well, keeps hitters off-balance. We know how tough that Dunmore order is, especially the top guys. We limited them, took care of the bottom (guys) as best we could. Just kudos to Coop and our defense. They made some great plays, some big plays.”

Dunmore only had six baserunners against Lukasavage. Evan Mizenko drew a two-out walk in the top of the first, but Lukasavage got a strikeout to end the inning. Jimmy Clark reached on an error leading off the third, but Lukasavage retired the next three hitters. Anthony Yerka had a two-out double in the fourth and Jaedyn Kura a two-out double in the fifth. Each time, Lukasavage left them stranded.

“We never saw Cooper before. We always saw Lorenzo (Hernandez) or (Nick) Mills,” Dunmore coach Sid Hallinan said. “He threw us off early. We were trying to adjust, a lot of conversations in the dugout what he was doing. He was all over the strike zone, he didn’t throw many balls. Even when he missed, it wasn’t by much. Lot of credit to him.

“The balls we did hit today, we hit hard. We just didn’t get enough of those. We can’t rely on those power alleys against a good pitcher because it’s not going to happen all the time. We had to get more singles. We weren’t able to play our game, which is we like to run. We like to get moving on the bases. When we can’t run and put pressure on the defense, that limits us.”

Mid Valley’s defense also backed Lukasavage. Left fielder Nick Pinto made a running, diving catch in left-center field to rob Mizenko of a hit for the second out of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Spartans gave Lukasavage all the offense he needed. They sent nine batters to the plate against Dunmore starter McMynne, who threw a five-inning perfect game in his previous start last week.

“That’s huge. Just the confidence you get when your team scores first,” Lukasavage said. “You can just go out there attacking and trust your team.”

With one out, Brett Yanoski laid down a bunt single and went to second on a throwing error. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder’s choice by Joey Romanosky when the throw to the plate was high. With two outs, Nick Hricenak singled to score Romanosky from second and make it 2-0. Three consecutive walks by Christian Ellis, Zach Buza and Lukasavage forced home a third run. That chased McMynne in favor of Jackson Cady.

Jeremy Cali and Yanoski opened the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back doubles to extend the lead to 4-0. A balk and a wild pitch enabled Yanoski to come around and make it 5-0.

McMynne’s home run in the Dunmore sixth came on the next pitch after Pinto’s catch and enabled the Bucks to spoil the shutout.

Lukasavage reached the 100-pitch mark with one out in the seventh when Luis Arias lined a single off his shin. Hricenak relieved, threw five pitches and got a game-ending double play.

“This was a huge win. Just a rally-booster, motivating for the team to get a revenge dub,” Lukasavage said. “Hopefully, we can keep this going.”
