SCRANTON, LACKWANNA CO. (WOLF) — One of the most famous trains in the world is set to roll through northeastern Pennsylvania this summer, drawing thousands of rail enthusiasts to the region.

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 — the largest operating steam locomotive in the world — will travel through Pennsylvania as part of a nationwide tour marking America’s 250th anniversary. The trip marks the first time the locomotive has traveled to the East Coast.

It left Shenectady, New York, after it was built and hasn’t returned.

Scranton, already home to historic Big Boy No. 4012 at Steamtown National Historic Site, will welcome the visiting locomotive for several days in June. Big Boy 4014 is scheduled to be on display at Steamtown from June 15 through June 16, with additional time on site for maintenance through the end of the month. Public viewing during those initial days will require tickets through the National Park Service.

Before arriving in Scranton, the locomotive will pass through parts of northeastern Pennsylvania, including a highly anticipated crossing of the Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct in Nicholson around 10 a.m. on June 13. Officials expect large crowds to gather along the route for a chance to see the historic train in motion.

The tour also includes a special passenger excursion through the Pocono Mountains on June 14. The ride, departing from Nesquehoning and traveling to Pittston, will be the only opportunity for the public to ride behind Big Boy 4014 during the entire tour. Tickets are being sold by the Union Pacific Museum as part of a fundraising effort.

In addition to scheduled stops, the locomotive will make dozens of short whistle-stops across multiple states, giving fans brief opportunities to see the train as it travels.

After its time in Scranton, Big Boy 4014 will continue south through Pennsylvania, with planned travel toward Jim Thorpe, Reading, and Pottstown before heading on to Philadelphia for Fourth of July celebrations.

Rail officials say the tour offers a rare chance to experience a piece of American railroad history, with Big Boy 4014 serving as a traveling tribute to the nation’s industrial past.
