The ‘Big Boy No. 4014’ will arrive in the Electric City on June 15th, 2026.

SCRANTON, Pa. — One of the biggest trains ever made will be rolling through Lackawanna County this summer.

The ‘Big Boy No. 4014’ is set to stop at the Steamtown National Historic Site. Megan Stevens is a park ranger at Steamtown. She says the park is ready to welcome thousands this summer for Big Boy’s visit.

“It’s going to be a fantastic event, big event. It’s like it named itself in a way,” Megan Stevens said.

She says the yearly number of visitors is 60,000. She is expecting 50,000 per day at the peak of the event.

They are called Big Boys for a reason. The wheels are 68 inches big, and the train weighs an estimated 120,000 pounds.

Douglas Dagger stopped by the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton with his 3-year-old son. They bond over their fascination with trains. The father-son duo is excited to see the Union Pacific Big Boy number 4014 right here in Scranton this summer.

“We just showed up today and happened to find out. So, we’ll be here in June to see it,” Dagger said.

25 big boy locomotives were made in the early 1900s. They were made so big to navigate through the hilly terrain in the west.

The Big Boy has never been on this side of the Mississippi River before. It is the largest operating steam locomotive in the country, and it’s traveling coast to coast. It will be traveling through northeast Pennsylvania on route to Philadelphia for America’s 250th celebration. Other viewings will be available when it rides through Nesquehoning and Nicholson.

Rick Price was on a road trip visiting family. He will see the Big Boy 4014, but not in Scranton. He lives a few miles from Cheyenne, Wyoming. The train will make a stop there in a few weeks.

“If it weren’t for the railroads, we wouldn’t have the cities across the country that we have,” Rick Price said.

Park rangers say on June 15th and 16th, train enthusiasts will be able to take pictures, ask questions to the crew and go inside the locomotive. The locomotive will still be here, from the 17th through the 30th. Union Pacific will be doing some maintenance at that time. There will be limited viewing for the public.

Reservations to see the train are now open. When you sign up, you will get the timing for viewing on your day.
