Brauhaus Schmitz will be taking over the 700 block of South Street this Saturday to host one of its most spirited events—Maifest. 

Now in its 13th year, the celebration of spring and German culture will kick off at 11 a.m., with festivities running all day (until 8 p.m.) and a packed line-up of activities, live music, food, and plenty of beer.

“Brauhaus Schmitz proudly brings this authentic German tradition to the heart of Philadelphia’s South Street for an unforgettable day of fun and merriment,” says Brauhaus Schmitz owner Doug Hager. “Our block party has become a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike, and we can’t wait to celebrate with South Street and our community. Come raise a liter with us under the giant Maypole.”

As Hager noted, the Maypole will act as a centerpiece to the event — and it happens to be Pennsylvania’s largest to date — but locals can also expect pay-as-you-go food and drink options, family-friendly activities and performances by the Die Heimatklange Band and United German Hungarian Dance group sprinkled throughout the day. Fare will span bites like bratwurst, pretzels, schnitzel, sauerkraut, potato salad and even a pig roast, while the bar will be serving up everything from lagers, wheat beers, crisp pilsners and cider.

Another fan favorite — the Liter Lift event — will be in full swing at 1 p.m., during which  20 of Philadelphia’s strongest men and women will compete to see who can hold a liter of beer up the longest and secure a spot in the national championship in NYC.

Admission to the Maifest Block Party is complimentary, but VIP tickets are available for $100. VIP includes food, drink and access to the Brauer Bund with seating, private bathrooms, an extensive German Food Buffet, beer tokens, a souvenir liter mug, haus swag and TVs to catch sporting events of the day and the Kentucky Derby.
