READING, Pa. – A program in Berks County is changing the way people explore the outdoors and the hidden treasures within.
“Our projects are basically these themed backpacks,” says Lisa Gauker, recreation and special events supervisor, Berks County Parks and Recreation Department.
With the help of a grant, the Berks County Parks and Recreation department reveals what they call Park Packs, each consisting of a theme.
“We have one celebrating bridge building and architecture, one for insect identification, a bird watching pack equipped with binoculars for both adults and kids,” Gauker says. “Lastly, we have a nature art backpack.”
A program that has gained popularity through DCNR and other state parks.
“We decided to do this here for Berks County Parks Department, because we have quite a large amount of people that come and they want to have somewhat of an educational immersive experience in the park itself,” Gauker says.
A county filled with lots of history.
“We’re a real hidden gem. A lot of times people stumble upon us and are always very surprised,” says Jessica Chernich, the history resource supervisor, Berks County Parks and Recreation Department.
Each backpack has a bilingual book geared toward kids of all ages.
And while exploring, kids can learn.
“The cataloging worksheet, it can be as something as like, you know, finding a cool rock, and you would want to describe it, and almost as if you’re putting it into a museum collection,” Chernich says.
To obtain a backpack, send an email.
“My email is LGAUKER @BERKSPA.GOV,” Gauker says. “And I’ll say, hey, here’s the address. Meet me at this time. You know, we’ll hand the pack out. The packs are meant to be utilized within our parks.”
