The Philadelphia Phillies seem ready to run it back after another disappointing playoff exit, but they will face some competition.

The team will have many of its high-priced veterans returning, including Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Aaron Nola. And the front office has indicated that it wants to bring back pending free agent Kyle Schwarber as well.

But Schwarber is set to be one of the most coveted sluggers on the market following his Most Valuable Player Award caliber season. And a former team of his is looming as a threat to drive his next contract’s price up.

“It is entirely possible the Boston Red Sox lose out on third baseman Alex Bregman, who opted out of his deal with the team to test free agency, and the organization could move on from designated hitter Masataka Yoshida, leaving the team with a need for a big bat,” Erik Beaston wrote for Bleacher Report. “Enter Kyle Schwarber.”

Schwarber, who played for the Red Sox four years ago, would be a significant upgrade over Yoshida in the team’s designated hitter role. But it won’t be easy to sign him away from the Phillies, where he has been a key part of the offense for the last few seasons.

“It makes sense that the Red Sox and, more specifically, manager (Alex) Cora would want to bring on board a player who can dynamically change a game with the single swing of a bat,” Beaston added. “With that said, Schwarber is beloved in Philadelphia, both by fans and teammates alike. The idea of him suiting up for another team in 2026, while possible, just feels unlikely. Prediction: Boston makes an offer but Schwarber stays put in the City of Brotherly Love.”

After so many years of standout production with the Phillies, Schwarber seems most likely to test the free agent market and then give his incumbent team the opportunity to match or exceed any contract offers he receives.

It will then be up to the Phillies to decide just how much they are willing to pay to bring the veteran back. But fans have good reason to believe the team will be willing to serve as the leading spender.
