The first day of the Finish Line Festival kicked off at Point State Park Saturday morning. The two-day event during Pittsburgh Marathon weekend is open to people of all ages and plays host to several race-related activities like the Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot. Friends and family members cheered on the weekend’s youngest participants as they crossed the finish line and earned a mini medal of their own. Organizers said around 800 kids participated this year, making for the largest number of tiny runners yet. “I love the Pittsburgh Marathon weekend. I always participate in it, in some way, and so to just see Levi and his older brother following in my footsteps, it’s just such a joy,” said Elana Glick, whose son Levi took part in the Toddler Trot. The cuteness continued at the Pittsburgh Pet Walk, which benefited the Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh. The big kids also got in on the race weekend action during the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon. The runners came prepared for what is the largest youth running event in the country. “My sister, we stretched before like all of it was happening,” said Rocco Litterini.Many of the young runners were part of the Kids of Steel program. Students from more than 360 schools and organizations logged 25.2 miles. The final mile was saved for Saturday. “It’s a great program, the kids have fun, they all love it. So, this is the one mile that I run every year,” said Dan Green, who ran with his kids. The Finish Line Festival will resume Sunday morning at 7 and will wrap up at 2 pm.
