Tape Breakdown

Laith Marjan is a well-travelled kicker who found starting roles the past two seasons for South Alabama and Kansas. A productive kicker, Marjan has good leg strength with a career-long of 55 yards (broadcasters also once remarked he hit from 65 in practice). His kicks get good and consistent arc.

Marjan has experience as a kickoff specialist, and though many college kickers do, not everyone falls into that camp. Marjan was specifically dressed as a KOS at East Carolina, which speaks to his leg strength. His unusual size for the position also helps create power. Marjan seems unbothered on bad snaps, too. That’s a plus.

Negatively, Marjan slumped badly at the end of last season. All three of his misses came over the final three weeks, and his missed three of his final five attempts. They were all makeable, too. Two stayed right on the right hash while a third curiously fell short from 41 yards. Can’t tell if it was tipped, if there was wind, a mishit, or a lingering injury that made this one short.

Though he’s kicked in the rain a little before, he has not dealt with cold weather compared to what he would see in a Pittsburgh regular season. That matters less for the preseason, but it’s part of his evaluation.

Conclusion

Overall, Laith Marjan was a productive and strong-legged kicker over the past two years. He’ll just need to keep his confidence high if he misses with the Steelers to avoid prolonged slumps NFL legs simply can’t afford. His odds of usurping Chris Boswell are remote, but he’ll use the summer to put on good tape for the rest of the NFL.
