The BurghProud Challenge will soon kick off as Pittsburgh’s three major sports teams team up to help raise funds for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to combat hunger. “This is really what Pittsburgh is all about. Pittsburghers helping Pittsburghers,” said Lisa Scales, president and CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Scales said their organization has seen firsthand how the need has grown over the years.”With the cost of groceries, gasoline, rent, everything is challenging. All of these essential household goods are challenging our neighbors to pay for them every month, and they just can’t do it. Especially the seniors and families with children,” she said. Participants can register through GoFundMe to create a campaign. The challenge involves walking or running 30 miles in 30 days while raising funds. For every dollar raised, the Richard King Mellon Foundation will match it, up to $1 million. “Knowing that all those dollars flow back to the food bank to support the community and people that are in need of support at this time of great food insecurity,” said Sam Reiman, director of the Richard King Mellon Foundation. Participants who raise $25 will receive a Burgh Proud T-shirt, while those who raise more than $2,500 will gain access to one of three exclusive experiences: two tickets and on-field batting practice with the Pittsburgh Pirates, a behind-the-scenes tour of Acrisure Stadium with the Pittsburgh Steelers, or a VIP practice experience with the Pittsburgh Penguins. If you raise more than $5,000, you will get access to all three experiences. Match dollars do not count toward the fundraising total.”The food bank can’t solve it alone. So it really requires partners like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates, and the Richard King Mellon Foundation and GoFundMe to join together to solve,” Scales said. “Pittsburgh sports fans are legendary. Yes, they show up in Pittsburgh, but they also show up all across the country, no matter where they are. They carry their black and gold pride with them, and time and time again, they’ve proven that their sport goes far beyond the game,” Yvonne Maher, executive director of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, said. Registration for the Burgh Proud Challenge is already open, with the event officially kicking off on June 1. If you would like to register, click here.
