The University of Scranton is headed to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament for the third straight season.
Quinn Carson’s goal with 1:02 left in overtime lifted the Royals over Maritime College, 15-14, on Wednesday at Weiss Field.
Scranton (14-6) will travel to face Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine on Saturday at 12 p.m.
Carson’s winner marked the first time the Royals led since scoring the game’s first goal at the 12:44 mark of the first quarter when Brendan Donohue found the net off a Cooper Roberts assist.
Maritime scored the next four goals and led, 4-1, after the first quarter.
Scranton tied it at 5 on consecutive goals by Chase Ritcey, the second coming on a Thomas Popolizio assist at the 3:35 mark of the second quarter.
Maritime scored four of the next five goals and led, 9-6, with 8:33 left in the third.
Scranton tallied the next three goals — one from Carson and a pair from Jason Kozak — to draw even at 9 with 5:36 left in the third.
From there, the teams would trade goals the rest of the way, capped when Scranton’s Kyle Holmes scored off a Donohue assist to tie the game at 14 with 1:32 left in regulation.
Carson, Donahue, Kozak and Holmes each had three goals for the Royals. Donohue and Roberts each had three assists. Carsen Kirchner had 13 saves, David Kelly won 14 faceoffs and Colin Giarrusso had five ground balls for the Royals.
Scranton outshot Maritime, 50-37, and won the faceoff battle, 22-10.
Ryan Hannaford led the Privateeres with four goals and two assists.
