CUMRU TWP., Pa. – A school bus company that has announced major layoffs is leaving its Berks County workforce intact.
A spokesperson for Durham School Services confirmed to 69 News that no reductions are planned at the company’s hub in Cumru Township, outside Birdsboro.
51 people work there, the spokesperson said.
Last week, Durham announced nearly 300 layoffs in Philadelphia, effective in June.
According to a notice filed under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, the company is blaming the loss of a contract with the Philadelphia City School District.
Durham is also laying off more than 250 people in New York state, according to WARN notices filed there. The layoffs impact two separate locations, one in Rochester and another in Watervliet.
According to media reports, the Troy City School District in New York is not renewing its contract with Durham.
Founded in 1917, Durham provides a variety of transportation services and has hubs across the U.S. It also operates under names like Trinity Transportation, Wise Coaches and Septran Student Transportation.
According to its website, the company has more than 22,000 vehicles in its North American fleet.
