The New York Yankees are expected to promote shortstop Anthony Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in time for Tuesday’s matchup against the Baltimore Orioles. The roster move follows an injury to utility player José Caballero, as confirmed by a source to MLB.com.
New York is anticipated to place Caballero on the 10-day injured list after the infielder suffered an injury to his right middle finger. The injury occurred during the ninth inning of Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, though Caballero did briefly appear as a pinch-runner on Monday.
Volpe, 25, is set to begin his fourth season in the major leagues after previously winning the team’s Opening Day shortstop job in 2023. He began the 2026 season in the minors after missing a significant portion of Spring Training while recovering from surgery on his left shoulder performed last October.
General Manager Brian Cashman previously stated that Volpe was optioned to Triple-A upon the expiration of his rehab clock because Caballero’s performance had earned him increased playing time. Volpe has appeared in 472 career games with the Yankees, maintaining a .222 career batting average.
Across 153 games last season, the shortstop hit 19 home runs and recorded 72 RBIs with 18 stolen bases. His recent minor league stint included nine games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he hit .205 with one home run and five runs batted in.
