SPRING TWP., Pa. — It all started at Red Caboose Park in Spring Township.
Dozens of people gathered for something the family didn’t know was coming.
Then, the walk. And just like that — a moment they say they will never forget.
“It’s an amazing surprise. I honestly don’t have any words,” said Brittany Zeoli, Ben’s mom.
Restoring Hope chose the family for a full home makeover after learning about their son Ben, a young boy with disabilities.
“He’s 5 years old. He’s in a wheelchair. The house is not wheelchair accessible,” said Donna Bagenstose with Restoring Hope.
Volunteers will spend nine days renovating the home, opening doorways and adding accessibility — all at no cost to the family. Restoring Hope says there are many more people in Berks County who still need help, so they are always looking for more volunteers.
“We get people to supply lunch for all the volunteers that are working on the house. We have painters and electricians and contractors and roofers and you-name-it that come in and help,” Bagenstose said.
It’s gesture that can bring more independence for Ben and his family.
“It’s going to put him in a spot where he can wheel around the house all on his own,” said Zach Zeoli, Ben’s dad. “We’re hopeful that he’ll be walking soon, and just have everything set up for that, so he can access what he needs on the first floor.”
