ERIE COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – The Erie County Sheriff’s Office alerted the public Wednesday of a scam involving officer impersonation calls.
According to the sheriff’s office, residents are receiving calls from scammers claiming to be “Officer Ryan Mullins” from the their office.
The fake officer goes on to demand individuals to post bond for a warrant issued over missing federal grand jury subpoena.
The caller informs residents the only way to pay their warrant is by depositing cash in a Bitcoin website.
The sheriff’s office clarifies to residents that they don’t demand cash payments.
They advises residents to never provide payment to anyone who claims they are a law enforcement officer and to instead hang up the call and notify police.
