This weekend is packed with family-friendly fun for Pittsburghers. With Remake Learning Days still in full swing, there are free events across the region designed to spark curiosity and learning. Check out this roundup of just a few of the city’s best events for families this weekend:

Through May 25: Skate The Square

Roll into Downtown Pittsburgh for Skate The Square, a pop-up roller skating rink taking over Market Square this spring. The retro-inspired experience features roller skating, live DJs, food and drinks, and a family-friendly atmosphere in the newly remodeled square. Admission is $17 for a 75-minute session and includes skate rental. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Hours vary throughout the week, with daytime and evening skating sessions available.

Fridays: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturdays and Sundays: Noon to 10 p.m.
Mondays through Wednesdays: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Thursdays: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Thursday, May 14-Saturday, May 16: Allegheny County Marbles Championship

All local tournament champions qualify for this exciting culminating event at the Allegheny County Courthouse Courtyard. Winners of the countywide marbles championship, two boys and two girls, will receive a partial-expenses-paid trip to Wildwood, N.J., to compete in the 103rd National Marbles Tournament the week of June 21. Registration is free, and it’s fun to just go watch, too!

Friday, May 15: Parents Night Out: Little Surfers, Big Waves, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Kick off summer early with a tropical-themed parents night out at Attack Theatre in Lawrenceville. Kids can enjoy limbo contests, ocean-themed crafts, creative play, beachy music and snacks while parents enjoy an evening out. This event is for children in Pre-K through fifth grade, and the “staycation” style event brings sunny vacation vibes indoors for a fun-filled Friday night. The is $30 per child and registration is required.

Friday, May 15-Saturday, May 16: Scholastic Book Fair, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh

If you missed your school’s book fair (or just can’t get enough of books!) this event is a chance to add to your library while supporting our local children’s museum. Pittsburgh’s new literacy campaign, “Won’t You Be a Reader?” kicks off this weekend with a free book fair at Museum Lab. Beginning at noon, the first 500 families through the doors can choose any three books from the Book Fair to take home. Visitors can also check out interactive exhibits, hands-on activities and site-specific artwork throughout MuseumLab, which is housed inside a former Carnegie Library dating back to 1890. Friday’s event is for specific school groups. Saturday’s event is open to the general public and is included with museum admission.

Friday, May 15-Sunday, May 17: “My America, Our Flag” at the Heinz History Center, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Celebrate America’s 250th at the Heinz History Center. This drop-in, hands-on Remake Learning Days activity invites families to design a personal flag exploring identity and what America means to them. As always, the museum is free for kids; and adult admission is $20.

Friday, May 15-Sunday, May 17: Balloon World on Fort Duquesne Boulevard

Take a whimsical journey through a balloon wonderland, featuring 250,000 balloons transformed into extraordinary sculptural installations, interactive exhibits and immersive environments. Timed tickets are available for $25.

Saturday, May 16: Bark & Brunch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bring the whole family, including furry friends, to the fifth annual Bark & Brunch on Hazelwood Green. This free community event features a doggy costume contest, pet portraits, a foam party, music, food trucks and a vendor market packed with pet-friendly fun. Families can also meet local rescue groups and organizations, while pups enjoy a festive afternoon out. Guests who bring a pet food donation for Animal Friends’ Chow Wagon can receive a $5 voucher for Bark & Brunch vendors while supplies last. Food and drinks will be available from local favorites including QuickE, Brisketburgh, Hot Bunz Food Truck, Rustic Ninetythree and Nell’s Sweet Treats. Find all the details right here.

Saturday, May 16: Make Together Lab at the Penn Hills Library, 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Families can explore maker culture together during this hands-on Remake Learning Days event. Kids will get the chance to experiment with maker technologies like circuitry, screen printing, 3D art and more, while designing their own creative projects to take home. Designed for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, the event also welcomes caregivers, siblings and participants of all ages to create and learn together. May 16: Future Explorers Day at the Moonshot Museum

Join Moonshot Museum for Future Explorers Day, a free, high-energy Saturday event for pre-K–12 students and families as part of Remake Learning Days. Enjoy hands-on rover building, mission simulations, engineering challenges, and career panels with aerospace professionals. Explore real spacecraft construction and discover exciting pathways into space careers through interactive, age-appropriate activities. Find more details here.

Sunday, May 17: Little Minnows Storytime, 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

Families with young children can settle in for a cozy themed story time. Held every other Sunday, Little Minnows Storytime features books centered on themes like community, snow, Black joy and more, creating a welcoming and engaging experience for little listeners and their caregivers.
