P.A. Humanities launched a state wide initiative that amplifies the lived experiences of Black Pennsylvania residents.

It’s titled “Voices of History” and Erie was one of six cities chosen to participate.

The Erie installment of “Voices of History” was created in partnership with Erie’s Black Wall Street.

The project collects personal experiences, family histories and stories that help shape our community.

There are eight recorded oral stories presented as short films stories, that combine powerful personal testimonies with photographs from participants’ own lives.

The purpose is to bring people together through conversation and community engagement.

Leaders hope the project will help people gain a better understanding of their shared identity while celebrating what makes Erie unique.

We spoke to Dr. Rhonda Matthews of Erie’s Black Wall Street who shared her story for the Voices of History Erie.  

“We need to be about the business of learning, who the people are who are in our orbit. Because we are all the people who make up, the places we call home.”

The premier takes place May 14, 2026 at the Erie Art Museum. There will be a reception at 6pm and the Screening will begin at 7pm Followed by a Community Conversation.
