Erie’s Harding School keeps name, honors Col. John Boyd
An Erie school will keep the name of a U.S. president while honoring one of its former students.
The Erie School Board on May 13 approved a resolution to maintain the name “Harding Elementary School” while honoring Col. John Boyd in another way.
The resolution affirmed “the continued use of the name … recognizing its longstanding significance to the school community and its identity as a place of belonging for students and families.”
The library at Harding, 820 Lincoln Ave., will be formally designated in honor of Boyd. A prior School Board approved a resolution in 2005 to name the library in his honor. However, that was never implemented and now will be.
Warren G. Harding served as president of the United States from 1921 until his death in 1923. His namesake school opened in 1925.
Boyd lived on Lincoln Avenue, attended Harding and served in the U.S. Air Force. He flew fighter jets during the Korean War and studied air combat tactics and fighter jet design. He died in 1997.
