A fiery two-vehicle crash Thursday in Bethlehem sent three motorists to the hospital and brought down live electrical wires, endangering emergency responders and the public, city police said.

It occurred about 12:25 p.m. at North New Street and Elizabeth Avenue, according to a news release from the department.

One of the drivers, believed to have caused the collision, was trapped inside the vehicle that had caught fire, police said. That driver had no passengers. The second vehicle contained two occupants.

The crash severed a utility pole, which caused the live wires to fall onto the road.

Members of the Bethlehem Police and Fire departments and Bethlehem EMS immediately began providing aid to the motorists while shutting down the intersection, according to the release.

Police did not immediately provide an update on the motorists’ conditions.

“During the preliminary investigation, it was determined that the offending vehicle may have been observed entering Route 378 Northbound from the wrong direction using the Main Street ramp shortly before the crash occurred,” the release states.

Police were continuing to investigate the crash in conjunction with the Northampton County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities asked the public to avoid the area while the damaged pole and electrical lines were repaired.
