A 14-year-old has been charged with third-degree murder after a likely accidental fatal shooting inside an Upper Darby Township home Thursday afternoon, police said Friday. A 14-year-old girl was killed in the shooting.
Police said it happened at a home on the 100 block of Springton Road at around 1:42 p.m. A school official said the incident is still under investigation, but it’s believed it happened when a group of children was playing with a gun. It’s unclear whose gun it was.
Police said four kids were inside the home at the time of the shooting and are cooperating with authorities.
The girl was a student at Beverly Hills Middle School, and student service professionals were available Friday for students who need support, Upper Darby School District Superintendent Daniel McGarry said in a statement to the school community.
“Please keep the student’s family, friends, and the community in your thoughts during this tragic time,” McGarry said.
McGarry urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of playing with guns.
