PALMYRA TWP., Pa. – The summer-like temperatures our area’s been seeing are perfect conditions – and timing – for those looking to kick off boating season early. This week marks National Safe Boating Week.
69 News Reporter Sydney Kay was in Lake Wallenpaupack in Pike County with some dos and don’ts of the water.
Lighthouse Harbor Marina Service Writer Sue Viola said the boat dealership was packed this weekend with all the beautiful weather.
Viola says everybody on a boat should put on a lifejacket. The lifejackets at the marina are U.S. Coast Guard-safety approved.
Viola says to make sure your lifejacket is buckled and zipped up properly, and that it fits correctly.
Children 12 and under must have a lifejacket on at all times.
The marina also recommends, and it is the law, that you have a throwable flotation device on board the boat, in case somebody should fall overboard during the trip.
Viola says a fire extinguisher is also required for the boat. Make sure the extinguisher is not expired, she says.
Make sure the air horn on your boat works, Viola says.
Samantha Sopko, Director of Sales at Lighthouse Harbor Marina, said the marina gives a half-hour safety briefing to guests before they head out into the water.
The rules of boating are much like the rules of the road. Sopko said people should not drink or use drugs before handling a boat.
Keep your head on a swivel and watch where you and other boaters are going, she said.
The different types of boats available at the marina include charter boats. pontoon boats, and tiki boats.
