Newswatch 16’s Valeria Quiñones stopped by Lackawanna State Park, where visitors soaked up the sunshine before chilly days move back in this weekend.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — With sunshine overhead and days feeling more like summer than spring, people at Lackawanna State Park spend the day enjoying every last bit of warmth before temperatures cool down.

For Fran Grillo of North Abington Township, the warm stretch means spending time outdoors with her granddaughter.

“This is Elsie, my granddaughter, and we come to practice her walking and enjoy the nice weather which we’ve had for the last three days,” Grillo says.

But the colder days ahead are no surprise to Grillo.

“I think Memorial Day is pretty cool, so I actually made plans to work, so I’m not worried about it at all and Elsie is going to her mom,” Grillo says.

John Kondret of Jermyn spends time at the park year-round alongside his wife and dog and says he is not surprised the warmth is not here to stay.

“Typical northeastern Pennsylvania weather. That’s all you can say about it,” Kondret says.

Still, Kondret says he hopes the warmer temperatures stick around the next time they return.

“I want to see the warm weather. I like the warm weather. I like to go golfing. I like to swim. All the things. Enjoy the outdoor activities you can do in the summertime,” Kondret says.

Visitors from outside the area also take advantage of the sunshine.

“We got lucky that we came at the right time. The weather has been not too hot not too cold, so it’s a perfect day or week to go to the parks and state parks,” says Lope Valenzuela of Queens.

While many welcome the warmth, one man says he does not mind the cooler days making a comeback.

“If you go fishing when it’s really hot out, they don’t bite as quickly. I did have experience with that a couple of years ago at Clarks Summit. We were out fishing when it was really hot, and didn’t even get a bite,” says Robert Frisco of Falls Township.

With chilly days ahead, many at the park say they are simply enjoying the warmth while it lasts.
