Governor Shapiro endorses Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti at Wyoming campaign event

Less than a day after the primary election polls closed, some are already on the campaign trail for November’s general election.

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti ran unopposed in the primaries to become the Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania’s 8th congressional district. Now, she’s campaigning at the Avenue restaurant in Wyoming, alongside Pennsylvania’s highest-ranking political official.

“I stand firmly on the side of protecting our democracy and standing up to the chaos, the cruelty, and the corruption in Washington D.C. That is why I’m here today, that is why I’m proud to endorse Paige Cognetti for Congress,” Governor Josh Shapiro (D).

Cognetti says she’ll be campaigning to reduce corruption and costs for folks in the months leading up to the general election in November.

“Really looking forward to in these coming months, talking about the way we can actually make costs go down for folks. We can go into the federal government, we can look into the budget just like I did when I was on the school board, like I did at the auditor general’s office, just like I did as mayor,” says Mayor Paige Cognetti, (D) Scranton

Cognetti seeks to unseat the Republican incumbent, Congressman Rob Bresnahan, who also faced no primary challenger.

Bresnahan responded to Cognetti’s campaign event in a statement saying, in part, “It’s out with “Paige Against the Machine” and in with “Paige Embraces the Machine” today as Governor Josh Shapiro campaigns for establishment choice and failed mayor Paige Cognetti at a super-secret press event at the Avenue Diner in Wyoming, PA.”

Governor Josh Shapiro’s challenger in the general elections, Republican Treasurer Stacy Garrity, also released a statement responding to the campaign event, saying, in part, “Josh Shapiro is more focused on his dreams of living on Pennsylvania Avenue than helping northeast Pennsylvania families achieve theirs. Under Josh Shapiro’s failed administration, Pennsylvania ranks 38 th in the nation economically, 39th in education, and 41st overall, and those rankings have real-world consequences.
