Gas prices are at their highest level in four years as a record number of people are traveling for the Memorial Day weekend, and Western Pennsylvania has some of the most expensive gasoline in the state.
The average price of gas in Pennsylvania on May 21 was nine cents higher than the national average. Pennsylvania’s average cost for gas was $4.64, with AAA reporting a national average of $4.55.
Prices were even higher in Pittsburgh and other western areas of the state. The Steel City saw a slight drop by a few cents from the previous week, but prices could rise as 45 million people travel for the holiday, up from 44.8 million last year. Also, AAA says 87% of them, or 39.1 million people, are driving, up from 39 million in 2025.

The national average for a gallon of regular is at $4.56, up 3 cents over last week and $1.38 higher than this time last year. Current prices are close to what drivers were paying 4 years ago, AAA reports, when the national average on Memorial Day was $4.61.
With gasoline demand on the rise, per the Energy Information Administration, and the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, AAA says pump prices are likely to remain elevated as the summer travel season gets underway.

The state average for gas in Pennsylvania on May 21 is as follows:
Regular: $4.637, down from $4.645 on May 20 and $4.649 the week prior
Mid-grade: $5.062, down from $5.067 on May 20 and $5.071 the week prior
Premium: $5.449, down from $5.458 on May 20, up from $5.447 the week prior
Diesel: $5.922, down from $5.926 on May 20 and $5.949 the week prior
What is the average price of gas in Pittsburgh, Western PA?
On May 21, Pittsburgh’s average cost of regular gas was $4.82, down from $4.83 on May 20 and $4.88 the previous week. Mid-grade came in at $5.25, premium was $5.69 and diesel was $6.01.
Allegheny’s average cost of regular gas was slightly higher at $4.85 on May 21.
