FSU baseball loses to Pitt in ACC Tournament

The Seminoles went 0-1 at the ACC Tournament, losing to the Panthers 8-6 in the quarterfinals. FSU led 5-6 in the top of the ninth inning, but Pittsburgh hit a three-run homer with two outs and two strikes to retake the lead.

Cal Fisher and John Stuetzer both hit out singles in the sixth inning to give FSU a chance to take the lead against Pittsburgh, but they were unable to execute. Brayden Dowd advanced them both on a grounder, where Pitt’s first baseman made a great play to retire him. Brody DeLamielleure was unable to drive them in, striking out looking to end the inning.

Chris Knier replaced Wes Mendes to start the sixth inning for FSU and was perfect. He struckout the first two batters before getting a groundout to end the inning. It was the first time FSU retired Pittsburgh in order this game.

FSU’s Carter McCulley was thrown out trying to steal second, ending the fifth inning. For the first time since the top of the first, this game is tied, and FSU made a pitching change, calling for Chris Knier to start the sixth inning.

Wes Mendes allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, one walk, and four FSU errors. It is the most runs he has allowed this season, but he kept FSU in the game and managed to throw five innings.

Ben Barrett has tied the game for FSU in the fifth inning, hitting a grand slam. It is his first home run of the season and his first since 2023. Pittsburgh is making another pitching change.

Florida State had a great chance to cut into Pitt’s lead in the fourth but was unable to do so. Carter McCulley and Chase Williams walked to load the bases with two outs, and Cal Fisher worked a full count, but he grounded out to end the inning.

Pitt got a one-out double in the top of the fourth when FSU’s Chase Williams never saw a ball in the fog. Wes Mendes was able to strand him there with a strikeout and a lineout, keeping it a three-run deficit.

FSU baseball was unable to get anything going in the bottom of the third inning, with the top of the inning going down in order. They have struckout seven times.

Wes Mendes has settled in after the first inning and was able to strand two runners in the third with another strikeout. He has given up four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk, striking out four.

FSU has tied its season-high for errors with four in just three innings. All four infielders have been charged with one. While they have only resulted in one Pitt run, it has caused Mendes’ pitch count to skyrocket to 69.

For the second straight inning, FSU stranded a runner. This time it was Gabe Fraser, who worked a leadoff walk. FSU has already struckout five times in two innings.

Wes Mendes had a much easier second inning, giving up one single before another FSU error let a second runner reach with one out. They escaped with a double-play, stranding one runner. The Seminoles have three errors, and Mendes has already thrown 41 pitches.

FSU got on the board with one run, but that was all as back-to-back strikeouts stranded Brody DeLamielleure at first. All three outs were swinging strikeouts for FSU.

The Seminoles have responded to Pittsburgh’s explosive top of the first. John Stuetzer started it with a single before he took second on a wild pitch. Brody DeLamielleure singled him home with one out for FSU’s first run of the game, making it a 4-1 game.
