BERKS COUNTY, Pa. — Memorial Day Weekend is almost here. But event organizers say Mother Nature has other plans.
Wyomissing’s Memorial Day Parade, originally set for Saturday, is now moving to Monday. Still starting at 10 a.m. with the same passion and respect.
“Honestly, that’s what we’re here for,” said Randy McKinley with the Borough of Wyomissing. “To remember those that paid that ultimate sacrifice for the country and gave their lives.”
Officials say forecast models showing heavy rain Saturday made the decision clear.
“You don’t want to put people either at risk from a safety standpoint or that they could potentially have some loss or equipment damage,” McKinley said.
And it’s not only parade organizers adjusting. At Schlegel Park Pool in Reading, opening weekend is now pushed back.
“Mechanically, everything was ready to go,” said Heather Boyer with the Reading Recreation Commission. “Mother Nature is not helping us. So unfortunately, we are not going to be opening this weekend due to the weather forecast. Our opening will be Saturday, May 30th.”
Meanwhile, Adamstown Community Pool announced it will delay opening one day and is now planning to open Sunday. And in Wyomissing, officials say if conditions improve, their community pool could still open Monday.
And while this Memorial Day Weekend may look a little challenging, Randy says summer traditions are still right around the corner.
“We’re super excited about Fourth of July,” McKinley said. “People get ready. A lot of waving, a lot of princesses, the scouts, a lot of music, a lot of smiles and a lot of flag waving.”
