A new quarter honoring the Declaration of Independence will soon start appearing across the US as the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary.
The US Mint has released the 2026 Semiquincentennial Quarter displaying the Declaration of Independence for circulation, the bureau announced in a news release on Monday, May 25. The coins will begin shipping to the Federal Reserve on Monday, June 1, for distribution to commercial banks and financial institutions.
The quarter commemorates 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. The front features Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration and the nation’s third President, along with the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776 ~ 2026.”
The reverse side shows the Liberty Bell ringing.
“While it is unclear whether it rang out in July 1776, the Liberty Bell often rang to draw people near and share an announcement, or a declaration,” the US Mint said. “The Bell’s crack is visible; the fragility of the Bell echoing the fragility of a young nation at its founding.”

The quarter’s back also includes the inscriptions “THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “LIBERTY,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
The coin is part of a broader 2026 program marking “250 years of American Liberty” and celebrating the country’s founding principles and history.
Four other quarters will honor former Presidents like George Washington, James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln. They’ll also feature depictions of the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, Independence Hall, and the Gettysburg Address.
The Revolutionary War quarter was released in March, with an event at Washington’s Mount Vernon celebrating the coin. The Mint hasn’t revealed launch dates for the other three quarters.
The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 authorized the creation of commemorative coins to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday.
