With 160 days until the November midterm elections, Pennsylvania State Rep. Lisa Boscola has introduced legislation aimed at banning AI-generated or altered media targeting candidates for public office. The legislation seeks to prohibit AI-generated or AI-altered video, audio, or images depicting a candidate within 90 days of an election if the intent is to harm their reputation or deceive voters. According to a memo accompanying the proposal, 29 states have already enacted laws addressing AI deepfakes in elections, including neighboring states Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York.
