SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Local students brought a colorful boost to downtown Scranton on Tuesday: Kids from the Scranton School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children joined members of Scranton Tomorrow’s Safe, Clean and Green Team to plant flowers.
The students raised the flowers at Doherty Park and planted them on the corner of Wyoming Avenue and Linden Street.
This project marks the official kickoff of Scranton City Pride, a series of citywide clean-ups and beautification projects running from May 26 to June 6.
Breaking ground on Wyoming Valley Airport expansion
“Cause I really believe that, that everybody can do something to make our community the best it can be, regardless of the age or ability, and these students are a really good example of that. They love coming down here,” Scranton Tomorrow Safe Clean and Green Program Project Manager Steve Ward said.
Volunteers from Penn State Master Gardeners in Lackawanna County were also on hand to lend guidance and support to the young gardeners.
Following the planting, students enjoyed a picnic lunch and games in the park.
