Capital Blue Cross has put its downtown Allentown building on the market, but it isn’t planning to leave the city.

The three-story building at 1221 Hamilton St. is listed for about $6 million. It is 42,684 square feet and was renovated in 2021 for $4 million.

Michael Race, a spokesperson for Harrisburg-based Capital Blue Cross, said the insurance company is planning to remain in Allentown and is “exploring options” on how to use the space.

“Our goal is to fill the building to capacity with both Capital team members and other businesses, either through a potential sale with Capital leasing back a portion of the building or Capital maintaining ownership while leasing some of the space to other organizations,” Race said.

“Our focus is on ensuring the building is fully utilized in a way that best supports our operations and contributes to economic activity in downtown Allentown.”

Included in the sale is a half-acre parking lot at 1401 Hamilton St.

Tony Iannelli, president and CEO of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, said he was glad Capital Blue Cross is remaining in the city.

“They may no longer be an owner of that facility, but their commitment to downtown hasn’t changed in my conversation with them,” he said.
