(WHTM) — Treatment courts began in Pennsylvania in 1997 and have spread across the state in the three decades since.
There are now 138 of them dealing with addiction, health and veterans issues. But during a virtual press conference on Thursday, supporters insisted going through the process isn’t an easy way out.

The courts require participants to dedicate themselves to getting the help they need and growth is strictly monitored. State Supreme Court Justice Kevin Brobson called it the most transformative initiative of his lifetime.
“The idea is that we cannot incarcerate our way out of addiction, mental illness or trauma,” said Brobson, who hosted the event. “By combining accountability with compassion, treatment courts are changing lives. They’re saving lives, and they’re strengthening our communities in the process.”
